Frequently Asked Questions
What is a travel warrant?
A travel warrant looks like a cheque but is actually a voucher for a train ticket. You need to go to a ticket booth in your train station and give the travel warrant to the National Rail worker. They will take it from you and give you the train ticket(s). You will not need to pay for the ticket(s) from London (all stations) to Dover Priory with return.
When should I go to the station to get the train tickets?
You MUST take your travel warrant and get the tickets on the same day that you are travelling to Dover and NOT BEFORE. This is because if you get the tickets before that day and for some reason you are not able to travel (example if you are sick), we would still have to pay for those tickets, and we will NOT be in a position to help you again. Make sure you go to the station on the day and early enough to queue for your train tickets.
How many times can I apply for a travel warrant from the DDVG?
Only once.
Can I apply for more than one ticket (for example to get my children) in the same application?
Yes.
Who can benefit from this scheme?
Priority will be given to detainees’ families however we will consider close friends as well.
In your application form there is a section called “Are you applying for an exception”? What do I write there?
You only need to fill in that part if you would like to ask to get a travel warrant from a station that is not in London and if you would like to get a return ticket on a different day than when you arrive in Dover. See the next 2 questions for more information. If you are not applying for an exception, just leave it blank.
Will you pay for my entire journey?
No. We can only issue a travel warrant from London (all stations) to Dover Priory with return. You will be responsible for the journey from your hometown to London and return (a cheap option is to take a coach to London). However in the application form we will ask you to mention your first departure station (even if it is not London) and if we are in a position to cover your entire journey, then we will do that. Under certain circumstances we may consider paying for your entire journey, subject to a maximum of £30 per ticket.
Can I get my return ticket for the day after I arrive in Dover?
No. Travel warrants are issued with a return ticket on the same day. We may be able to make an exception and you need to request this and provide a valid reason in the application form (section entitled “Are you applying for an exception?”) Once we consider your request we will take a decision and inform you and this will be at the discretion of the DDVG.
Will you help me with accommodation in Dover if I have a return ticket the day after?
No. It is your responsibility to take care and pay for your accommodation.
Will you cover expenses to get from the Dover Priory station to the Removal Centre and back?
Unfortunately no. But we will provide you with information on how to get there on foot (approximately 15 minutes uphill). There are taxis available outside the station.
